Network Rail issued an exclusive statement to the Press yesterday evening (Wednesday) paying tribute to Arif Mahmood (26) who died following an incident close to Dunfermline Bus Station.

Alex Sharkey, Network Rail area director for the east of Scotland, said, “Arif was a popular member of the team and he made a strong impression on the business. All of our thoughts are with his family, and his colleagues in our Inverkeithing depot, at this difficult time.” On Monday, the family of Arif Mahmood (26) spoke exclusively to the Press as they tried to come to terms with their loss.

They said, “Thank you for all the support.

“We are grieving at the moment and are waiting for the outcome of current police investigations.

“If anyone has information we are appealing for them to come forward.” Police closed off the area around Dunfermline Bus Station for most of Sunday after the incident, which happened on Queen Anne Street around 2am.

Arif, was firstly rushed to Dunfermline’s Queen Margaret Hospital and then the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, where he later died.

The news of his death on the Press website reached more than 44,000 people through our Facebook page with hundreds paying tribute to the Network Rail engineer on social media.

Three people, whose addresses were all given as Fife, were arrested and charged in connection with Arif’s death and appeared at Dunfermline Sheriff Court on Monday – where one was granted bail.

Shaun Mitchell (29), was charged with assault to danger of life and assault to severe injury and danger of life and made no plea or declaration.

Clare Janet Wallace Buchanan (23), was charged with assault to danger of life and she also made no plea or declaration. Buchanan was committed for further examination and granted bail. Her next appearance is still to be confirmed.

The third person charged in connection with the incident was Gavin Edward Kirkcaldy (25), who was charged with culpable and reckless conduct. He also made no plea or declaration.

Mitchell and Kirkcaldy were both committed for further examination and remanded in custody.

Police say they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident but are urging any further witnesses to come forward and contact Police Scotland on 101.
