The firm, who operate services across the Kingdom, will increase its prices by less than two per cent from 5th April in a move that they say reflects “rising costs and reduced public-sector investment in buses”.

The changes mean that weekly unlimited travel across the Kingdom with Stagecoach will cost £4 per day but they will also launch new Dayrider Plus tickets in Dunfermline, covering travel as far out as Culross, Dalgety Bay and Lochgelly, and ticket options for under-16s will also be reduced in the city.

Stagecoach also say that the increase is “broadly in line with increasing staff costs resulting from growth in the economy” and that “money from fares is used to invest in more modern, greener vehicles, greener technology and maintaining and enhancing bus services”.

A £2million investment was made in 14 new vehicles in Fife last year and Andrew Jarvis, managing director of Stagecoach East Scotland, said, “Many sectors of the economy are facing rising costs and buses and coaches are no different. Prices are also being affected by the continued squeeze on public-sector spending on public transport. We have done our best to hold down prices for our customers. We will still have the lowest bus fares of any major bus operator in Britain and catching the bus or coach is still significantly cheaper than commuting by car.

“We are continuing to use the money we get from fares to reinvest in greener vehicles, vehicle technology and other improvements to services, as well as taking care of our employees who deliver these vital bus services in our communities.”
