Fife Council has confirmed that virtually all of the primary schools they’ll use as polling stations for the General Election will not close.

And whilst pupils are unlikely to be in favour of the move, it’ll be a vote winner for parents who won’t have to arrange alternative childcare.

The list of West Fife primary schools used as polling stations that will be open is : Pittencrieff; St Leonard’s; Lynburn; Pitcorthie; Pitreavie; Canmore; Masterton; and King’s Road. However the Bridges Centre in Rosyth will be closed on polling day.

In Fife, 33 schools are used as polling stations for elections and most will be open as normal on 7th May.

Liberal Democrat councillor Tim Brett said, “Whilst this might be a ‘disappointment’ to some of the pupils, the fact that most of the schools used as polling places will remain open to staff and pupils is likely to be beneficial.

“I warmly welcome this decision by Fife Council which follows concerns raised by myself that large numbers of pupils were losing out on their education whenever elections were held.

“I asked whether the matter could be reviewed, with the result that nearly all of the schools in question will remain open on 7th May.” He added that the council was also considering the possibility of moving in-service days to coincide with elections, as is the practice in other councils, such as Edinburgh.
