Writer of the song and lead singer of the band, David Barr, chatted to Press:ON about being in the last stages of the International Songwriting Competition, which received more than 18,000 entries from all over the globe.

His song, Luna Park, will be judged by some of the top executives in the US music industry and hit artists.

David said, “It’s a massive honour to get to the final of one of the biggest songwriting competitions in the world. Especially knowing that I was selected from more than 18,000 entries.

“I’m really delighted to know that hugely successful artists such as Run DMC, London Grammer, Keane and Avicii will all hear my song.

“But what’s even more exciting is that my band’s music will be played to the presidents of major US record labels such as Sony, EMI, Warner Brothers and Virgin.

“These are some of the most influential names in the music industry – some musicians spend their entire careers trying to get heard by these guys!

“Being from a small town I think sometimes people can feel that these things aren’t achievable or are far-fetched but I’ve always believed in myself and believed that anything is possible if you’re willing to work hard at it.

“The music scene locally is really vibrant at the moment. Acts such as Oskar, Foreignfox and The Mona Lisa’s are all working hard and doing really well.

“I hope that other local musicians can take inspiration from the fact that a song written on a rainy Sunday in Dunfermline can get out there and gain exposure in the United States and to the people who can really make a difference!

“I guess it would be the modest thing to say ‘winning is only a bonus now’ but that be a lie – The Moon Kids are in it to win it!” Just two songs from the UK have made it into the final 14, Luna Park and Vance Joy’s Riptide.

The annual song contest provides the opportunity for both aspiring and established songwriters of all levels and to promote the art of songwriting.
