A top-flight assistant referee and a former youth football coach has been accused of child sex offences in Scotland.

Pete Haynes, 50, told BBC Scotland that Hugh Stevenson sexually abused him over a three to four-year period from 1979.

Stevenson coached hundreds of boys with youth teams in Glasgow and Renfrewshire during that time.

The revelations come as Rangers confirmed they sacked a youth scout after a boy made abuse allegations against him in the early 90s.

Gordon Neely- who worked at Ibrox during the Graeme Souness era- was axed following a complaint from a youngster who told his dad who was a serving police officer.

It's understood Neely was dismissed at a meeting involving Souness and his assistant Walter Smith.

Star-spotter Neely lasted three years at Rangers. Two years ago he died of cancer aged 62.

In a statement, the club said: "Rangers is now aware of an alleged incident involving an individual who worked very briefly for the club more than 25 years ago.

"It's understood the individual was dismissed immediately and that the police were informed.

"Rangers wishes to stress that all employees adhere to the strictest codes of conduct, especially when dealing with children and young people.

"Rangers have not been approached by Police Scotland or any authority regarding this allegation."

It comes as the number of clubs embroiled in the child sex abuse scandal reportedly climbed to 55.
