A disgusting ‘f*** the Pope’ sign at a Glasgow darts event has caused outrage on social media.

The vile sectarian sign was broadcast live on ITV4 when a punter waved the banner in front of Australian darts star Simon Whitlock as he headed out for a match.

TV commentators were forced to apologise after the sign appeared at the event in the Braehead Arena.

Images of the moment have been shared on Twitter with many fans branding the stunt as a 'disgrace'.

One darts fan tweeted: "The darts are in Glasgow tonight, so naturally, here’s a lovely dose of sectarianism."

Another added: "Some bigots at the darts in Glasgow. Get a grip."

Police Scotland say they have been made aware of the incident and are looking into it.

A spokesperson said: "Images of the sign have been passed to the appropriate department to investigate.

"Police Scotland is liaising with the event organisers to deal with this incident.

"Anyone with information on this incident should contact 101."
