CROSSFORD may have staged its last village gala after just two new volunteers turned up to an emergency meeting.

The children's gala has been running for more than 60 years but the long-standing village tradition could soon be over unless fresh faces are found fast.

A Facebook SOS highlighting the urgent need for volunteers to join the gala committee was viewed by more than 24,000 people.

Now, existing members are urging villagers to turn out for an emergency meeting at the beginning of August.

Steven Lilly, chairman of the committee, is pleading for members of the community to step forward and give back to the village.

He told the Press: "It's easy to forget that we arrange so many events throughout the year. We organise the Gala Week, the fireworks display, activities during Halloween and in the run-up to Christmas as well. We're now in a difficult situation, as without volunteers, it's all going to fall by the wayside.

"It's a huge part of the community. It would be a massive loss to not only Crossford but for the surrounding areas as well. It would be a very sad day if Crossford were to lose all the events and activities that have brought the village together. If everyone contributed a little here and there, we would have enough to keep going.

"And at the end of the day, it's all about the kids and putting smiles on their faces. They always look forward to Gala Week and when Santa's sleigh rolls through the village. It's a very rewarding feeling and a great cause to be a part of. It would truly be a massive loss for those kids."

Although he is stepping down as chairman, Steven will stay on the committee to allow for a smooth transition when a new committee is appointed.

After two years of volunteering as vice-chairman, in a joint role with her husband, Claire Lacy is also standing down from her role.

She said: "We've done tireless work over the years and put so much effort into making sure each year we have a brilliant gala and other great events for the community.

"People don't realise all the work that goes on behind the scenes and just how much time is spent making sure the events during the year are carried out smoothly and successfully."

A special meeting will be held on Monday, August 1 in Crossford Village Hall at 7.30pm in the hope of volunteers turning out in large numbers to ensure the gala continues for many years to come.
