CROSSFORD Gala has been saved at the last minute after fresh faces turned up to an emergency meeting on Monday.

The Press reported last month that the future of the annual fun day was in jeopardy after just two people answered a plea to volunteer.

That sparked villagers into life and 22 turned up on Monday, with current chairman Steven Lilly stating: "It was a great success.

"I think it woke people up and made them realise that something had to be done to save the gala.

"We have a secretary in place who is comfortable organising meetings, setting the agenda and keeping the minutes.

"And we have someone who has a background in PR and marketing, so she will be able to help promote our events and advise the committee going forward.

"I will stay on and have the new chairman shadow me for a spell to make sure there's a smooth transition into the role."

The gala has been running in Crossford for more than 60 years and there's relief that the long-standing village tradition is set to continue. The committee organises the gala week, fireworks display and other activities during Halloween and in the run up to Christmas.

A provisional committee is in place and will meet on Sunday night to discuss plans and appoint a new chairman, as well as confirming the final members and roles on the committee.

Mr Lilly said: "I would like to thank all the people who came along to offer their help and support at Monday's meeting, and also thank all the committee members from last year for all their hard work. In particular, I'd like to thank the deputy chairs, Claire and Steve Lacy, and secretary, Ann Temple, for all their efforts and commitment."

He added that the new committee are set to confirm events for the coming months.
