DOES plunging into the freezing Forth with other bonkers bathers to raise money for charity sound a good way to bring in the New Year?

If it does, then the annual Limekilns Breakfast Dip is the event for you.

The popular dook returns on New Year’s Day and organisers are hoping that brave West Fifers will be tempted to join the 60 people who have already registered to take part.

Like this year, when 86 loony dookers braved the cold temperatures, money raised will go to the Limekilns Heritage Trust and their efforts to save the village’s pier, which is in danger of collapsing into the sea.

The structure, which dates back to the 16th century, is listed on the ‘Buildings at Risk Register for Scotland’ and needs around £100,000 to be restored.

The 2017 dip raised £1,600 for the fund and organiser Alex Hill said: “In the first year there were just four of us and 12 people came to watch. It’s become more popular and, when people are watching, they think, ‘It’s not that bad, so why not?’ “We’ve already got 60 people registered on Facebook, so there is a lot of interest.

"It works really well and we’re encouraging people to get sponsored, although the £10 registration fee all goes to charity.

“It’s something different and people want to do it instead of eating a boring steak pie and watching the Great Escape with a hangover!”

The fun starts at midday, where the local Scout group will supply tea, coffee and bacon rolls, while music and a raffle will keep the participants entertained before the dook at 2pm. The Ship Inn will open from 12-6pm and will sell soup and stovies, with all proceeds going to the fund.
