WEST Fifers are to be offered bowel scope screening to help prevent bowel cancer.
Letters will be sent to Fifers aged around 60 offering them the opportunity to have the screening.
The procedure will be carried out by a specially trained endoscopist and involve the insertion of a thin flexible tube with a camera on the end to look inside the bowel.
Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer in Scotland, but early detection makes it easier to treat and improves chances of survival.
Dr Charles Saunders, NHS Fife consultant in public health medicine said, “Bowel scope screening is a safe and effective way to look for polyps which are then usually removed at the time of screening.
“Most people will be given the all clear, with a few requiring a follow-up, in the event cancer is found then the early detection makes it highly treatable.”
