CULROSS Gala Week ended with a bang last Saturday as local kids displayed their athletic prowess in the traditional gala races.

Angus Vipond and Teoni Ward came top boy and girl respectively after competing in events including the 100m, 400m and high jump, while the tots were kept entertained with a bouncy castle and toys.

Residents then enjoyed a raft race on the Forth – which saw one of the entries sinking even before the halfway mark.

The village had had a fun-filled week of activities, starting with football and hockey matches on Monday.

A petting zoo visited on Tuesday, and in addition to the cute and furry creatures, kids were made to lie down while staff placed cockroaches on them.

‘The Lego Movie’ was screened at Wednesday’s film night, with Nelson’s serving up their famous ice-cream.

Older kids spent Thursday whizzing around in race buggies at Fastrax in Oakley, and adults took part in a quiz night.

A hotly-contested fancy dress competition was held on Friday, and the elaborate costumes vying for prizes included Oompa-Loompas, Charlie Chaplin, a Chinese dragon, a copy of Culross Town House and the Flintstones car made with logs – complete with Fred and Barney and a dinosaur in the back.

The winners were Ayla and Lois Learmonth, who came as the ‘Queensferry Crossing’ dressed as queens and standing inside a ‘bridge’.

The Causeway Race was also held on Friday, involving kids running a course around the village.

Gala secretary Keira Neal said, “We had a lovely day for the gala and the weather was good.

“Everybody enjoyed themselves throughout the week – it was wet for the fancy dress, but it’s always good to watch and it was just amazing!

“We hope we will have even more people coming along next year.” The gala is also looking for volunteers and those interested should call Keira on 07919 301626 or email culrossgala@yahoo.com.
