ROALD DAHL and the Commonwealth Games seem an unlikely combination but they joined forces for a day of fun-filled activities at Crossford Primary School on Friday.

Pupils were given the opportunity to celebrate the Glasgow Games as part of a sponsored ‘Commonwealth Mile’ walk to raise funds for the school on Roald Dahl Day, which celebrates the work of the famous Danish children’s novelist responsible for classic books such as The Witches, The BFG, Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

The school decided to combine the two events and embarked on a commonwealth fund-raising walk having been awarded a Game On award, which is presented to schools in recognition of offering wider learning experiences created around the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and its legacy.

Crossford’s headteacher Debbie Broadley said, “Crossford Primary were one of the first Fife schools to receive the Game On award which we are very proud of. As part of the legacy of the Commonwealth Games we are doing a sponsored mile to provide challenge and encourage fitness. "We are also celebrating Roald Dahl Day so to combine the two events, some of us are doing our sponsored mile dressed as characters from Roald Dahl books! For the rest of the day, we will be learning about Roald Dahl and doing activities based on his books.”
