PUPILS at Crombie Primary School got on their bikes and won a trophy from Provost Jim Leishman.

Crombie was one of 26 Fife primary schools to take part in bikeability month earlier this year. Fife Council’s travel planning team promoted and encouraged schools to put pupils through bikeability training and the school with the biggest percentage of pupils completing training (based as a percentage of the school roll) was declared the winner.

Fife-wide, 605 pupils completed their training, while Crombie were crowned cycle champs with 94 per cent of their pupils trained.

Provost Leishman said, “Well done to Crombie Primary School, 94 per cent of their pupils receiving bikeability training is a major achievement.

“Fife Council is keen to promote active travel as a viable option for travelling to school and bikeability training is a key part of this.

“Our schoolchildren in Fife are learning lifelong skills that’ll encourage them to cycle and lead healthier lifestyles.” Anne Marsh, Crombie Primary School headteacher, said, “Bikeability is a great initiative to teach children how to use their bikes safely.

“We are very grateful to Ruth Padmore and Lyndsey Fox, parents who volunteered to run the cycle training and who have worked with our children. We’d like to say a big ‘thank you’ to them.” Bikeability is the updated cycling proficiency training but with a few improvements. It’s designed to give children the skills and confidence they need to cycle safely on today’s roads. The council’s travel planning team encourage all schools to take part in bikeability and have secured funding from Sustrans for the next two years with the aim for all Primary 6s in the Dunfermline area to receive bikeability training.
