A CAIRNEYHILL Spar and Post Office shop worker and fund-raiser has been left upset after “low life” thieves made away with charity tins filled with around £100. The callous theft came less than a week after Oakley butchers Thomas Johnston had three charity tins stolen during a break-in, as the Press reported last week.

The Cairneyhill theft took place on Wednesday 18th February around 8.30pm, and police are looking for a male in his 30s with a goatee beard and a woman in her late 20s.

Lynne D’Agostino, assistant manager of the store on Main Street, told the Press that she and colleague Helena Taylor were collecting the money in the store for three 26-mile-plus walks they are taking part in later this year.

She said, “I wasn’t in the shop at the time but we have caught them on CCTV.

“It really is awful what they have done – what kind of low lives could steal charity boxes?

“Myself and a colleague are doing three marathon walks this year – the Pink Ribbon Walk, the Kilt Walk and the Moon Walk and customers were kindly donating money in the tins raising money for breast cancer charities and others.

“There were notes in there and coins so I suspect there was quite a lot collected as they were nearly full.

“As the girl was at the till and the cashier was doing their job the male took the charity tins off and then they made their way around the shop where he then placed them in her bag, but we have it all on CCTV.” Last week the Press reported the theft of the charity tins stolen from the butchers in Station Road, Oakley, which took place during the morning of Saturday 14th February.

Sergeant Brian Henderson said, “This is a despicable crime which affects charities who are doing their best to help the most vulnerable in our society.”
