THE next generation of budding Press reporters could come from Cairneyhill Primary after pupils established their own newspaper.

‘The Cairneyhill Voice’ is put together by a team of Primary 6-7 pupils who have notebooks and a nose for a story ready to report all the latest news from the school.

They published their first edition in February after teachers Joanne Dick and Lorna McIntyre put forward the idea and Lorna said that a visit to the school by Press editor Simon Harris and photographer Jim Payne had increased the pupils’ enthusiasm for the project.

She commented, “We wanted to give them a responsible club that they had to drive forward themselves and while we’re there to guide them, they have come up with the ideas and roles themselves. The kids loved the ownership of it as they believe that it’s theirs, and we’re already working on the second and third editions. There’s 15 of them altogether so it’s a busy little newsroom that we have and they’re so enthusiastic about it which is great to see.

“This is a literacy-based project and it is something that they can share with their high school teachers when they move up from the school. They loved Simon and Jim coming in to meet them; they asked a lot of questions which I was impressed with and it has given them a taste of reporting. Some of them are keen to explore it further as a potential career and a couple of the girls are interested in the photography aspect, so it will colour their thoughts in that way too.”
