That’s the claim made by a group of Steelend residents who have now started a petition to take down the speed limit from 60mph to 40mph on a section of the B914.

The road runs from Junction 4 of the M90 to Saline, and concerned villagers are particularly concerned about the stretch between Upper Steelend and the Redcraigs crossing.

Saline and Steelend Community Council chair David Chisholm claimed that five cars had already been “through the fence” since the start of the year, and urged for action.

He told the Press, “It’s a useful cross-country road from Kelty to Dollar and Alloa and the speed at which cars are travelling and undertaking is of concern.

“Traffic regularly travels at speed which most people would regard as unsafe.

“In the mornings and evenings there’s a lot of commuter traffic and now with the quarrying and mining activities going on around here, and the timber, you get heavy lorries as well.

“The lorries are not speeding but do pose a danger for vehicles that are speeding.

“The road is actually quite narrow and has soft verges and a series of bends with adverse camber, so if you’re speeding you could end up in the fields.

“When there’s ice and snow and the road is slippery, people coming over the brow of the hill and round the bends actually go off the road.

“The visibility is quite good but poor when people are pulling out of their driveway or at the end of a farm track.

“There are quite a few tracks coming down to the road so you do take your life in your hands trying to pull out.” Mr Chisholm said the issue of lower speed limits had been raised with Fife Council in the past, but had been rejected by the local authority.

And he continued, “This issue has come up at community council meetings over a number of years.Fife Council have concerns over journey time if the speed limit is lowered but it’s a minute or two over a distance of two miles.

“There’s also the issue of enforcement and the cost of a speed camera to the public purse.

“The road hasn’t been upgraded for decades and it’s carrying lots of traffic and maybe there should be a review.”
