It is truly staggering how the local economy has dramatically transformed in such a short space of time. In January there was much talk of expansion of Oceaneering Multiplex at Rosyth who make massive, tree width cables for the oil industry, the construction of the aircraft carriers at the Dockyard and the reopening of Lexmark by electronics firm Cemtron. There was also great excitement about the rebirth of the Hyundai factory at Halbeath.
Twelve months on Oceaneering are making redundancies, Cemtron is in administration, there’s silence about Hyundai and even the aircraft carriers are to be delayed. And there’s more to come with the shakedown from the HBOS Lloyds TSB merger which could hit west Fife hard with our VISA centre and Intelligent Finance. I’ve seen first hand the concern and anxiety this causes for employees and their families.

Westminster can be very chaotic at times but one thing it does do well is the select committees. It’s where normally partisan politicians put aside party badges to combine their minds to hold the Government to account.
Recently the defence committee conducted an inquiry into armed forces medical care following a series of alarming news stories and reports about the state of the service.
