Near miss highlights dangers of Dunfermline High Street

LUCKY. That"s what I call the frail 80-odd-year-old woman who narrowly avoided being flattened by the driver of an enormous white delivery van as he attempted to reverse into a space near McDonalds on Dunfermline High Street on Friday.
On realising he"d misjudged the space, he suddenly pulled away, when she was only four feet from probable death.
This was at 11am, when it was considerably busy; she was blind-sided to him as he gazed backwards from his left hand drive vehicle.
Thankfully, nobody has yet been hurt on Dunfermline"s "pedestrianised" major street, though I once saw a toddler come close to similar injury while the mother yapped on her phone.
I know of no other place in the developed world that encourages us to walk unwarily into the paths of vehicles.
Perhaps our authorities consider it necessary to wipe out a few members of the public, unless there is a sensible explanation.

The pedestrianised High Street has always been a complete joke! It is the worst example I have ever seen - there are ALWAYS cars and vans dodging around the shoppers. It is a miracle that no-one has been killed. Surely it must be possible to ban all traffic for at least a portion of the working day?

Yep, i agree with this. Maybe a solution would be to put bollards along certain areas of the high street, where most people converse to stop traffic gaining entry. Surely it would be upto the shop or store to communicate with their delivery driver as to where the best place to drop off or trolley their goods would be. Outside the front door on a busy Saturday is a little inconsiderate for the happy shopper.!!!

The high street parking and traffic situation is horrendous. I have a double buggy and have found that I have to dodge around parked cars and cars speeding along to keep my children safe. It is unacceptable. Due to the amount of parked cars there are times you can\'t even get on the pavement because of them to get out of the way of moving traffic. They should make it completely pedestrianised to safeguard the general public.
