MORE than 160 youngsters from across West Fife enjoyed shooting hoops with Dunfermline Reign Basketball Club last Friday.
Pupils in P6/P7 from 16 schools took part in the action-packed event at St Columba’s High School as part of Dunfermline and West Fife Sports Council’s long-running primary schools festival series, which features 22 separate events in eight sports.
Organised in conjunction with Active Schools Fife, Fife Sports and Leisure Trust and the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust, Reign welcomed 19 teams to test their ball skills with Darryl Wood, the club’s head coach, saying: “The talent level was good and was a bit above what we had last year.
"We had just over 160 kids and 19 teams from 16 primary schools, which is massively up on last year, when we had 10 schools come along.
"It is great to see so many kids participating and to add another six schools. We hold community sessions for under-10s and under-12s and a lot of the kids attend those classes.
“We’ve partnered with six high schools and have links with some of their feeder primaries, so some of them get weekly sessions with us.
"There are a lot of positive signs for the club with the numbers of kids attending weekly sessions and watching their development, and the energy level in the hall was spectacular.
"Some of the staff from the school who came in to watch said the atmosphere was great and there was a real buzz about it.
"The sport is having a real boost at the moment as it has more TV coverage than ever, and the more people watching it makes a massive difference to the numbers that want to play.”
