AN EAGERLY-AWAITED clash between the current St Columba’s senior football team and the school team from 1996 took place on Friday.
The match was held to mark the 20th anniversary of the ‘Team of 96’ winning the Fife Schools’ Senior Cup.
Captain of the 1996 side, David Treanor, contacted Jim Moffat, principal teacher of PE and coach of the current senior team, to discuss the possibility of arranging a match and the challenge was accepted.
The 1996 team included John Potter, head coach with Dunfermline Athletic and a former player with the Pars, St Mirren and Celtic.
Many of the veteran side are now parents or family friends of current pupils which definitely added a degree of spice to the occasion.
The game was also refereed by ex-pupil Andrew McGachan.
The game was played with great sportsmanship, commitment and humour. Rennie gave the current team the lead before the veterans hit back to make it 1-1 through Keatings.
After the break, the 2016 team went into a 2-1 lead thanks to Duncan before McClurg made it 3-1.
The 1996 team pulled one back to make it 3-2 through McGuire – and were somewhat controversially denied what looked like a stone-wall penalty in injury time.
