DUNFERMLINE youngster Jack Colquhoun packed a punch to pick up a bronze medal at the GB Three Nations boxing tournament recently.

The 14-year-old Dunfermline Boxing Club member travelled with the Scotland team to Cardiff for the event for youth and junior fighters, which took place over the weekend of April 30 and May 1. He produced a battling display – despite being given just five days’ notice of his inclusion. His coach at the Canmore Street club, Tommy Cannon, told Press Sport that Colquhoun had originally been pipped for a place in the competition – pitting both junior and youth boxers from Scotland, England and Wales against one another – following a national trial in Glasgow.

But with less than a week to go before the first bell sounded, Colquhoun was given the unexpected call to fight in the 52kg junior event, where he was unfortunate to lose to Wales’ John Wilson in a split decision.

Cannon said: “I took him for training at the national trials and he wasn’t picked but the boy who was must’ve dropped out. He had five days’ notice and the boy he met was boxing at a European Championships the week before.

“Jack was really chuffed to get the chance to box at GB level but it was hard – they got the bus down on the Friday, which took 10-and-a-half hours, trained on the Saturday morning and then fought in the afternoon. He reckoned he won the first two rounds but lost the last one. Somebody obviously agreed with him because it was a split decision.

“It seemed as though it was a really good bout and a brilliant experience for him.”

He added: “He first came to the gym when he was eight – he told me he was 10! At that time I didn’t take anyone in under 10 so he sneaked in but he’s a good boy.”
