THE draw for the re-designed League Cup will take place tomorrow evening and Press Sport has taken a look at how it will work and who the Pars could end up facing.

Regarded as Scottish football's second cup competition after the Scottish Cup, the SPFL have made radical changes to the tournament in a bid to generate greater interest and excitement.

The Betfred Cup, as it will be known, will include a group stage in the first round in July that features 40 clubs; all 38 teams not involved in European qualifying matches, plus Highland League champions Cove Rangers and Lowland League entrants East Stirlingshire.

Teams will be drawn into eight groups of five on a seeded and regionalised basis, and they will place each other once in a round-robin format on July 16, 20, 23, 27 and 30.

So how does this affect the Pars?

Dunfermline have been included in the 'North Section' of the tournament and are one of the 'unseeded' clubs in the draw.

They will go into a group with one of the top four seeded teams, of the second four seeds and two other unseeded clubs.

The top seeded clubs are St Johnstone, holders Ross County, Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Dundee, while the second tier of seeds are Dundee United, Falkirk, Raith Rovers and Dumbarton.

Athletic therefore are guaranteed to play one Premiership and one fellow Championship side.

In terms of distance between clubs, a worst case scenario could see them pitched in a group with Ross County, Dundee United, Peterhead and Cove Rangers, or they could draw St Johnstone, Raith Rovers, Cowdenbeath and East Fife in a more localised group.

Teams will be awarded three points for a win, one for a draw and drawn matches will go straight to a penalty shoot-out, the winners of whom will be awarded an additional bonus point.

The eight group winners and four best runners-up will progress to the second round, where they will be joined by Celtic, Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibernian, in a knock-out format.

The final will be played on November 27 and the draw for the first round will be live on BT Sport tomorrow night at 7.30pm.

What would your best/worst draw be? We'd love to hear your thoughts!
