WEST FIFE disability sport duo Alison Patrick and Kieran Steer struck gold on the continent as both athletes set their sights on Rio.

Dunfermline paratriathlete Alison retained her PT5 European Paratriathlon title in Lisbon, while Crossgates boccia player Kieran won gold for Team GB at the Czech International Open in Prague.

Alison, who is visually impaired and runs, swims and tandem-cycles with support from guide Hazel Smith, was one of seven Team GB members to finish on the podium and her win helped her gain vital qualification points for this year’s Paralympic Games.

The current world champion will be hopeful of boarding the plane to South America, particularly as she won a preparation event in Rio last year, and the Lisbon event provides 50 per cent more ranking points than any other ITU World Paratriathlon event.

Meanwhile, Kieran, who has aspirations of being selected for the GB boccia squad in the BC4 class, competed in the pairs event alongside world champion Stephen McGuire.

After winning their qualifying group with wins over Slovenia and Czech 2, they defeated Hungary 5-3 in a closely-fought semi-final.

They came up against a Scotland/Czech combination pair in the final – which included Stephen’s brother, Peter – but the duo saved their best performance until last as they stormed at an 8-1 victory to win the gold medal.

In the individual competition, Kieran produced another impressive performance to qualify from his group at the top of the standings but, despite going 4-0 up in the first end of his quarter-final with Stephen McGuire, his opponent fought back to force a tie-break and then edge past the West Fifer before going on to win the gold medal.

Meanwhile, Dunfermline athlete Owen Miller travelled to Glasgow recently for the Miller Meet competition.

He competed in the T20 class 800m for athletes with an intellectual impairment and ran 1:58.20, setting a new personal best by 0.7 seconds.
