FIFE Synchronised Swimming Club made history recently as they picked up their first ever gold medal at the Scottish Synchronised Swimming Club Championships.

Star members Alison Thomson, Eva Runciman and Rhiannon Laing combined dance and swimming to perfection with their ‘How to train your dragon’ routine to take the top prize in the trio competition at the Royal Commonwealth Pool.

They shared first place with Clydebank ASC A team on a successful day for the club, who train at Carnegie Leisure Centre, as they also achieved good performances in the duet and combination events.

In the duet competition, Nicole McLuskey and Shannon Leighton had tough opposition but finished in a highly-credible sixth place with their ‘Jurassic Park’ routine, while the combination ‘Hercules’ team of Sorcha Morrison, Torin Morrison, Olivia Cameron, Cara Gillespie, Olivia Runciman, Kate Matheson, Isabel Boylan and Eva Williamson pulled off their best lift yet in what was a first competition for the majority of them.

The creative sport sees competitors use a series of different athletic movements with the added complication of setting their routine to music. Routines can last from two to five minutes with four main categories of competition: solos, duets, teams and combinations. Teams can have up to seven swimmers, with up to 10 in combinations, and it is open to both men and women.

Two routines are performed in each competition; a ‘technical’ routine which follows prescribed steps; and a ‘free’ routine where swimmers can demonstrate their creativity and choreography.

The club is hosting a ‘come and try’ session at 6.30pm on Sunday, September 11 at the Carnegie Leisure Centre. Girls and boys are both welcome.
