THE head coach of Bayside Girls 13s believes goalkeeper Alicia Yates can become a national star after she won her first Scotland call-up.

Stuart Allan said he has "not seen anyone better at youth level" than his super stopper after she was named in the national women's under-15 squad for a training camp in Edinburgh at the weekend.

The talented youngster, whose safe guarding of the Bayside net has helped them reach the semi-finals of this year's Scottish Cup, was one of 32 players chosen from clubs including Manchester United, Chelsea, Celtic, Rangers and Hibernian.

Her Scots selection is a first for Bayside and Stuart said: "It's a bit surreal when you look at the list of clubs and see the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and a couple from the States, and then there's little Bayside there as well.

"It's the first time someone at the club has received international recognition and it is well deserved. I've not seen anyone better at youth level, either a boy or a girl, and she works so hard and is very dedicated.

"We've played a lot of games and opposition coaches all comment on how fantastic she is. She's our 'sweeper keeper' – a bit like Manuel Neuer – and I think she's head and shoulders above some goalkeepers who are playing full-time at the moment.

"It's great recognition for the whole team and I'm sure it will be the first of many call-ups for her. She can go as far as she wants in the game."

Stuart added: "It was unexpected; she didn't know she was being watched and I think her mum had to sit her down when she found out! She's very unassuming but she's in there on merit and I told her not to feel overawed by it. It reflects well on everybody – herself, her parents, her team-mates and her coaches."
