DUNFERMLINE football star Caroline Weir has been named Scotland's player of the year after topping a fan poll.

The 21-year-old midfielder won the public vote for the Vauxhall Scotland Player of the Year accolade ahead of Kim Little, Hayley Lauder, Jane Ross and Jo Love.

Pars fan Caroline, who began her football journey with Elgin Star at just five-years-old, was instrumental for the women's national side as they made history by qualifying for their first-ever major tournament.

She played in each of Scotland's qualifying games, pitching in with two goals, as Scotland won all but won of their matches to qualify for this summer's European Championships in the Netherlands.

Caroline, who signed for Liverpool Ladies last year, has played 31 times for her country since making her debut in 2013 and was recently included in Anna Singeul's squad for the upcoming Cyprus Cup tournament.

On receiving her award, Caroline told the Scottish FA website: "It’s a fantastic honour to receive this award and is one I will treasure.

"I am loving my time with Liverpool at the moment and playing for them consistently has helped with my Scotland ambitions too.

"Women’s football has never been so popular in Scotland and we are delighted with what we have achieved so far.

"The team are all very excited about going to Holland this summer and showing the rest of the continent what we can do on the big stage."

Fans chose Caroline as their top player by voting at www.vauxhallfootball.co.uk/scotland and Lorna Morison, sponsorship marketing specialist at Vauxhall, the national team sponsor, said: "It gave me great pleasure to hand the trophy over to Caroline on behalf of Vauxhall.

"We are proud of our association with Women’s football and look forward to supporting Caroline and the Scotland team on their journey to Holland this summer."

Caroline and her team-mates will play in Group D of the Euros, which begin on July 16, and will take on England in their opening game before facing Spain and Portugal.
