DUNFERMLINE badminton starlet Brooke Stalker will go for national glory this weekend as she steps on court at the Scottish National Under-13 Championships.

The talented McLean Primary School pupil, niece of the late Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Russell Hogg, is among the favourites for the title when the action begins at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility in Motherwell on Saturday.

Brooke, who recently won the girls’ singles at the recent Dunfermline and West Fife Sports Sports Council Primary Schools Badminton Singles Festival, is the 3/4 seed for the individual event alongside Alexandria’s Keryn Swan.

Top seed Lois Turnbull, of North Berwick, who starts her own bid against Erskine’s Zoe McInnes, is expected to meet the West Fifer in the last four of the tournament on Sunday following the quarter-finals.

The semi-finals of the singles and doubles events will be played in the morning sessions, with the finals taking place in the afternoon.

Brooke, who two years ago was ranked as Scotland’s top female at under-10 level and has played for Scotland, was introduced to the sport by her uncle, who stepped onto the Commonwealth podium in 2002.

Russell was Scotland’s third-most capped player with 117 appearances before he tragically lost a brave battle with cancer in September 2012 at the age of just 44.
