CAROLINE WEIR missed out on being crowned PFA Player of the Year during last night's awards ceremony.

But the Dunfermline born midfielder was named by her peers in the women's team of the year.

Scotland international midfielder Caroline was shortlisted for both the women's player of the year and the young player of the year prizes that were handed out during the glittering ceremony in London.

The 21-year-old Liverpool Ladies midfielder was named alongside stars of the men's game, including PFA Player of the Year N'Golo Kante of Chelsea, Manchester United superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Tottenham's England midfielder Dele Alli.

Pars fan Caroline, whose international team-mate Jane Ross was also nominated for the top prize, missed out to Manchester City full back Lucy Bronze, while the young player award went to Birmingham City's Jess Carter.

Although she didn't add to her Liverpool fans' player of the year and Scotland women's national team player of the year trophies, she was named in the PFA FA Women’s Super League Team of the Year, having top scored for the Reds last season with seven goals in 16 games.

She also won the Sporting Breakthrough Award at the inaugural 2017 Nordoff Robbins Scotland (NRS) Scottish Sporting Awards last month.

Caroline, who began her footballing journey with Elgin Star, was also an ever-present in the Scotland team that reached their first-ever major tournament by qualifying for this summer's European Championships in the Netherlands.

The Scots will take on England, Spain and Portugal at the tournament, which kicks off in July.
