IT WAS treble tops for Woodmill High School this week as three of their talented sports teams celebrated being crowned Fife champions.

And they came agonisingly close to making it four as their S2 netball team also finished as league runners-up.

The school’s under-15 footballers set the ball rolling for success at the end of March when they took on Dunfermline High School in the final of the Fife Schools Football Association League.

Woodmill qualified for the final after winning all five of their Division A games against Lochgelly, Bell Baxter, Beath, Glenrothes and Kirkcaldy high schools, while Dunfermline came through Division B.

That qualified both schools for the league semi-final play-offs and, after Dunfermline defeated Lochgelly, Woodmill’s win over Levenmouth Academy set up an all-West Fife final.

Woodmill looked on course for victory in the final when Kieran Young and Lucas Berry gave them a two-goal lead but Dunfermline fought back to take the game to a nerve-shredding penalty shootout, which Woodmill won 7-6 when Robbie Woodend netted the decisive kick.

Their success was followed by the school’s S3 and senior netball teams at last Thursday’s Fife League finals day at Beath High School. The third year’s A team won all six of their Pool B matches – scoring 116 points and conceding just 23 – for the chance to take on Balwearie High in the showpiece match.

They completed a fine year on the court with a 29-12 triumph and that was followed by the senior A team, who played Beath in their final.

They had come through Pool D of the regular Fife Schools Netball League season by winning all three of their matches against Levenmouth, St Andrews and Kirkcaldy High School B to top the group, while Beath A did likewise against Queen Anne, Woodmill B and Waid Academy.

Woodmill, however, proved too strong for their opponents as they, like their S3 counterparts, added the league to their Fife Championship success by winning 38-13.

The S2 girls came close to making it four trophy wins out of four when they faced Balwearie, who had finished immediately below them in Pool A of the league after Woodmill won all fives of their matches, but lost a keenly-contested final by a 27-13 scoreline.
