TALENTED Primary 7 pupils at Bellyeoman Primary are set to sign off on a sporty high when they embark on a hockey first for the school next week.

The team of eight youngsters will travel to Glasgow on Wednesday to take part in the Scottish Primary Schools Hockey Festival after winning an annual festival organised by Dunfermline and West Fife Sports Council.

The event, which took place on May 3, saw 18 teams from 12 schools take part in the competition – held as part of a series of events hosted by the sports council in eight sports that take place throughout the year – and Bellyeoman came out on top.

It was a first-time success for the school, who join runners-up Canmore in going to the national event, which will take place on the hockey pitch that was used for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Linda Watson, a support auxiliary at Bellyeoman, helps coach the team and said: “It was a good day. We played seven games; five in the pool and two to see who would finish first, second, third and fourth. We won all seven games without conceding a goal, which we didn’t expect so it was a nice surprise for them.

“They’ve come on great and it should be a good day (at the national finals). It’s a first for the school so it makes it that bit extra special. They’ve got a lot of other things on at the moment being in P7 but they’re excited and really happy. The hockey club is made up of P6s and P7s, and 16 go to it. P6 won their tournament too which is great, and they get to go around classes if they’ve been successful and show the rest of the school what can be achieved.”
