ELGIN STAR shone brightest among their rivals from across Fife and Tayside to lift silverware at an inaugural under-14 tournament.

The club’s 2003 team, who play in the Fife under-14 league, competed in the first-ever regional cup competition at that age level for sides from Fife, Tayside and Perth and were crowned winners after a thrilling final victory on May 4.

After beating Glenrothes Strollers (2-1), Kettle United (9-3), Monifieth (5-0) and Kennoway United (5-2), they took on DFC Wanderers in the last four and made it to the showpiece courtesy of a 3-2 victory. In the final they faced Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts and, by the same scoreline as the semi-final, they created history by becoming the cup’s first winners.

Delighted secretary Karen King said the team were “buzzing” and said: “Last year, we won the Fife Cup, which was such an achievement, and we got to the last 16 of the Scottish Cup. It is testament to a strong Fife league that four Fife teams were in the semi-finals and the final was a good game; there wasn’t a lot in it. Hillfield Swifts are a strong team and it was really end-to-end.

“We’re second in the league, got far in the Scottish Cup and are the first winners of the regional cup, so we’re doing fantastic. We’ve got our sights on the league now.”

She added: “Some of the boys have been there since they were five-years-old, and have grown together. They’ve got a strong bond and did extremely well to win it.”
