YOUNGSTERS from Crossford Primary were on the ball as they lifted the winners’ trophy at a primary school football tournament recently.

The school was one of eight teams that participated in the George Beveridge Memorial Cup that took place at Inzievar Primary School.

Featuring sides from the cluster primary schools of Queen Anne High School – as well as a joint Oakley campus team comprising pupils from Inzievar and Holy Name primaries – the competition saw youngsters in Primary 5-7 play a round-robin seven-a-side tournament.

The annual event, which was first held in 2009, is named in memory of local man George, a well-known figure in the Oakley community who also gave a lot of his time helping at Inzievar before he passed away in 2008.

Pupil support assistant Val Melrose, who has organised the tournament since it began, said: “It was a fantastic day; we had eight schools and it was played in great spirit. We even got the weather which was nice!

“We played eight minutes a game and it was seven-a-side. Crossford won the cup and Oakley campus were second for the third year in a row. Maybe next year we’ll win it!

“We also had a fair play award and myself and Dougie Hynd, of Oakley United, who helped me keep scores and things, chose Mya Robertson, from Carnock Primary School.

“She stood out as being particularly team-spirited.

“It was a nice day and everyone enjoyed themselves.”
