CAROLINE WEIR made Scottish women's football history last night but couldn't inspire them to victory in their Euro 2017 opener.

The 21-year-old midfielder started and played the full 90 minutes as Scotland played their first-ever game at a major tournament against England in the Netherlands.

But, while it was a night to remember for the Dunfermline-born player and her team-mates, the scoreline was one to forget as the Auld Enemy romped to a 6-0 win.

On what proved to be a difficult evening for Anna Signeull's side, England dealt an early blow to Scotland's chances when Jodie Taylor ran on to a defence-splitting pass to slot the opener beyond goalkeeper Gemma Fay.

Despite some neat passing from the Scots - and some dangerous set-piece deliveries by Weir - the Lionesses scored again in 26 minutes.

A free-kick was played into the box and although Weir did well to clear Lucy Bronze's effort off the line, Taylor was on hand to follow up.

Ellen White added a third before the break before Taylor completed her hat-trick in the 53rd minute.

Scotland refused to give in and continued to try and play positively, but Weir picked up a booking for a foul on Jill Scott as the clock ticked towards 90 minutes.

Although she tested keeper Karen Bardsley in stoppage time, Jordan Nobbs and sub Toni Duggan right at the death capped a frustrating night for Weir and her team-mates, who play Portugal in their second game on Sunday.
