BOWLERS from West Fife were at the double recently as two teams picked up trophies at separate national events.

The Scottish Association of Local Sports Councils (SALSC) hosted bowling competitions for ladies’ and gents’ teams from sports councils throughout Scotland, with Dunfermline and West Fife taking part.

And both the gents’ and ladies’ teams hit the jackpot as they showed their superiority on the greens to win both tournaments.

The ladies’ fours event was held at Strathaven Bowling Club, South Lanarkshire, and Dunfermline and West Fife Sports Council were represented by both an A side, who reached the last four, and a B team, consisting of Anne Bernard, Val McGregor, Sarah Ewing and Lynn Lees.

After qualifying from their section, the two Dunfermline and West Fife teams met in the semi-finals with the B team coming out on top to reach the final, where they went on to defeat Clydesdale Sports Council.

Following that success, it was the turn of the gents to bowl in their fours on Thursday in Nairn and, after a high-quality but gruelling round-robin of seven qualifying games, Dunfermline and West Fife reached the final against the host club’s team, who represented Nairn Area Sports Council.

The gents – Alistair Smith, Graham Bratcher, Ron Donnie and Alan Bernard – completed the double by beating their hosts 11-2 to give Dunfermline and West Fife Sports Council the distinction of holding both titles in the same year.
