MEMBERS of Aberdour Tennis Club served up some thrilling action as they took to the baseline for the club’s annual championships earlier this month.

The 2017 competition was held on September 2 and the watching crowds were treated to some play that would not look out of place at Wimbledon throughout each of the 10 finals that took place.

The men’s singles was a tightly-contested match between club president Mark Lynch and young coach Nicol Brennan, who took the trophy by the closest of margins with a 7-6, 7-6 victory.

The skill on show from both players thrilled those in attendance and joining Brennan on the winners’ rostrum was Megan Slater, who repeated last year’s success to win the ladies’ singles against Fiona Graham.

Slater’s brother, Todd, made it a family double as he tasted victory in the men’s doubles with Kevin Devenny, while Graham made up for her singles defeat by winning the ladies’ doubles alongside Sandy Tjolle.

Other winners in the championship, played on the tennis club’s brand new courts, included D Rendall and G Slater in the mixed doubles; D Winskill in the under-18 girls’ singles; E McKinlay in the under-18 boys’ singles; W Struthers and B Bielska in the veterans’ ladies’ doubles; J Arnott and J Bielski in the veterans’ men’s doubles; and L Mercer and J Arnott in the veterans’ mixed doubles.

In May, the club, which fields three men’s and three ladies’ teams in the LTA East of Scotland League, were given a grant of £49,988 from the SUEZ Communities Trust.

Formerly the SITA Trust, the independent funding body was set up 20 years ago and provides grants through the Landfill Communities Fund and Scottish Landfill Communities Fund.

The cash allowed the club to begin work to upgrade the surfaces of its three outdoor, floodlit courts with artificial grass, invest in maintenance equipment and carry out work on its clubhouse.

The vibrant club has around 100 adult and 100 child members and offers a busy adult and junior coaching programme.
