TWO talented West Fife footballers have proved that if you’re good enough, you’re old enough after winning call-ups for Scotland’s under-16s.

Robyn McCafferty and Alicia Yates, who are both just 14, were selected for the squad that are playing a challenge match against Northern Ireland in Belfast this afternoon after impressing coaches at a national team training camp.

The teen pals, who attend Woodmill and Dunfermline high schools, were part of an 18-player pool for the game in Belfast having both been involved at under-15 level.

Before joining up with the squad on Sunday, Hibs Girls star Robyn told Press Sport she was “a bit overwhelmed” when she received an email confirming her selection.

“I’ve only just turned 14 so I didn’t expect it,” she said.

“But I’m buzzing. It’s a dream to play for Scotland and to have an opportunity where it could happen is brilliant.

“The last couple of weeks have been mad. There was a training camp Wednesday to Friday a few weeks ago and I got a call from Pauline McDonald, who’s the head coach, on the Wednesday night asking if I could play in a squad game on the Thursday.

“After that, I was supposed to go home but I was asked to stay over, and then I did some training on the Friday morning. Pauline then told me look out in a couple of weeks when they would announce the squad but I thought nothing of it.

“When I got the email it was surreal but I was absolutely delighted.”

She continued: “I hope I’ll get a bit of game time but, even if not, it will be a great experience going away with the Scotland squad. It’s all about working hard and getting as much experience that I can get so it’s such a big thing that will benefit me in the long run.

“I’m one of the younger ones so I am a bit nervous but I’ve got to go and perform and work as hard as I can. Me and Alicia are good friends so it’s good to have someone I’m close with and share the experience with.”

Alicia’s mum, Denise, said that although her daughter was “a bit apprehensive” about joining up with the squad, she was also excited by an unexpected call-up.

After starring in goal for the all-conquering Bayside Girls’ 13s team that memorably won the Scottish Cup last year, Alicia is now keeping the ball out of Hearts’ net and Denise said: “She was a bit surprised to say the least!

“She was at an under-15s camp last year then went to Dublin with Scottish Schools at under-15 but, this year, she doesn’t know how she was pulled into the under-16s.

“She didn’t think it would happen because, unfortunately, she was out for six weeks with a tear in her quad (muscle). She struggled for a couple of months and had no time to recover.

“She had only trained fully for a week before the camp; she was disappointed afterwards but had obviously done enough!”

Denise, who said Alicia became a goalie because it was the last position available at Bayside, added: “She was ecstatic and can’t wait to get away. She phoned me to tell me and I couldn’t get a word in edgeways, then when Alicia was finished, she said she was speechless!

“There are a lot of girls that she’s played with with Scottish Schools, and Alicia and Robyn get on really well. It’s a good bunch of girls.”
