GIRLS from six West Fife primary schools got behind the wheel to find out about the high octane world of motor sport.

They were at Raceland near Tranent for Dare To Be Different, finding out just what a career on and off the track has to offer.

The pupils, from Cowdenbeath, Milesmark, Park Road, Pitreavie, Hill of Beath and Pittencrieff primary schools, raced around in go karts, attended Sky Sports interview tutorials, took part in a Pirelli pit stop challenge and had a good look at Force India's Formula 1 car.

There were also nutrition and fitness workshops, while flagship programme STEMNET (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network) helped out with an entertaining hovercraft-building exercise.

Dare To Be Different was founded by former Formula 1 driver Susie Wolff MBE and the Motor Sports Association.

She said: "It’s been great to bring Dare To Be Different back to Scotland, which is obviously a place particularly close to my heart.

“Part of the appeal of this initiative is that we get to take it all around the country and introduce as many girls as possible to the opportunities that exist within motor sport."

The programme is designed to inspire, connect and celebrate women in every aspect of the sport, from driving and engineering to fitness, nutrition and media skills.

Susie added: “I am delighted by the positive impact that Dare To Be Different has already had – and there is much more still to come.”
