PARS leg-break victim Aaron Splaine has revealed that he hopes to return to action before the end of the season.

The 21-year-old is continuing his rehabilitation after fracturing his tibia and fibula in a horror injury sustained during a Fife Cup tie with Burntisland Shipyard in November.

The game was subsequently abandoned before the former Kilmarnock midfielder was taken to the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, where he underwent surgery the following day.

Speaking to Press Sport this week, Splaine reported.”Everything’s fine, my rehab has been really good and Kenny (Murray, physio) reckons I might be back before the end of the season.

“I’ve still got to get the screws in my ankle taken out but, probably by the middle of March, I can start running.

“I can do virtually everything apart from running. I don’t actually know if I’m ahead of schedule; Kenny just gives me stuff to do and I go and do it!

“For the first four weeks, it was the same thing every day to try and build muscle back up and strengthen my leg. I had crutches at the start so the first thing was to get me walking without them.

“I ask Kenny when things are going to happen; I asked him when I’m going to start running and he said I need to do 4-6 weeks of squats and stuff to strengthen my legs up, and then you can go into running.

“Kenny’s a big help, especially as he’ll set out a circuit and join in and do it with me, so it’s not as if I’m doing it on my own.”

Looking back to the night he sustained his injury, Splaine, who revealed that he lost 10kg of weight while recovering in hospital, recalled: “As soon as it happened, I knew straight away in my head that I’d snapped my fibula and tibia, so I shouted over to the bench, ‘I’ve snapped my leg, you need to phone an ambulance’.

“I’ve got a few mates back home who have done the same and, as soon as it happened, I don’t know why but instantly I knew I’d broke my fibula and tibia and not just one of them. When I went over I could see the bone pushing the skin out.

“This is the worst injury I’ve had. I’ve broken my foot and done my knee before but this is the worst one. I was in hospital for the first week, then I went back home and was just lying in bed all day. I lost 10kg in weight because of the drugs I was on, but it is what it is.

“You’ve just got to get on with it.”
