WEST FIFE boxing fans will have the chance to hear tales from one of the sport's most iconic figures in May.

Joe Calzaghe, a two-division world champion who retired in 2009 undefeated, is coming to the Glen Pavilion on May 26 in an event organised by Dunfermline man Craig Roxburgh.

Craig, who previously organised events in aid of Dalgety Bay youngster Josh Cathcart, who has a bionic arm, last year hosted an 'Evening with Ricky Hatton' in aid of Rosyth-based Trench and Valleyfield Miners boxing clubs.

The successful night raised £5,470 and now boxing fanatic Craig, who is also involved with the British Boxing Board of Control, hopes to provide "one of the best nights coming to Dunfermline" by bringing Calzaghe to town.

The Welshman, who was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2007 and has appeared in Strictly Come Dancing, dominated the sport's super-middleweight division after winning the WBO (World Boxing Organisation) title against Chris Eubank in 1997.

He went on to make 21 title defences before moving up to the light heavyweight division in 2008, in which he twice won The Ring Light Heavyweight Championship, before retiring a year later.

Calzaghe was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 2014 and Craig said: "Ricky Hatton was the first event like this I did and to bring that calibre of person here was a big thing.

"I don't think Joe Calzaghe will come back to Dunfermline, so it's kind of a one-off, and it's good to be able to get people like that to come.

"I've been friendly with Joe's son over the last six to eight months. We kept in touch and I mentioned to him that I'd like to bring his dad to my hometown, and he said that he'd come.

"The hardest bit was finding a date where the Glen and Joe were available!

"It will be more of an entertaining night. I said to my mum, who's not a boxing fan, that I'd organised it but she knows who Joe is. She said 'that's him who was on Strictly Come Dancing!'.

"I think there will be a lot of couples and a mix of men and women there, which is great.

"I'm trying to make it one of the best nights coming to Dunfermline."

As well as Calzaghe, the evening will feature comedian Raymond Mearns and will be hosted by master of ceremonies Willie Allan, while Alex Arthur will also be among the guests.

Those in attendance will receive welcome drinks and a three-course meal, while there will be the opportunity to take part in a raffle and a sporting memorabilia auction.
