IF YOU can't think of many sporting activities you can do for just £2, then Dunfermline Reign can provide you with one.

And if you're female and fancy giving basketball a go, then Reign can help you enjoy the sport in exchange for your loose change.

The club, based at St Columba's High School, is giving women aged 18 or over the chance to shoot some hoops in social, one-hour basketball sessions every Monday organised by members of the senior ladies' team.

After initially taking place as a four-week trial before Christmas, interest in the classes has blossomed and they now attract up to 20 females, some of whom have never played before, while others may be returning to the sport.

Laura Kirk, together with Jeni Matson and Carrie Blair, puts on the pay-as-you-play sessions and has been delighted with the response.

"We thought we'd give it a go and the women seem to like it," she told Press Sport.

"We've had up to 20 women turn up – some that have played before, and some that have never picked up a basketball before – and the sessions are just really varied and allow them to have a bit of fun and get a bit of exercise.

"Just before Christmas, we did a four-week block to see what people thought, and it was a free session. Now we've come back and we're just charging £2 for the hour, and the women are coming back, so they're clearly getting something out of it.

"Reign as a whole club has a family feeling around it; parents come to games and come together, and it's quite nice because a lot of the mums that come to sessions have kids that play, so they know each other but maybe haven't spoken to each other.

"It's definitely grown and whatever they want to do and how they want to progress it will be led by them."

That means there are opportunities to progress into the senior ladies' squad, and Laura continued: "We have had a couple who started off with us that now come to our senior ladies' session as well.

"Sometimes people can't come every week so that's why it's completely a pay when you come sort of thing and they're not tied into anything.

"The senior ladies' team is always looking for more players, hence why we started the new social session, and we want to make sure we can keep a women's side going.

"So many of the women's teams struggle to enter leagues because they don't have enough women. We're in the Lothian League with all the Edinburgh teams; we did dabble a wee bit in the national league last season but we struggled for numbers because it's so much more travel and the games are so competitive.

"But, being females ourselves and because we play for the senior team, it's great to see that it has grown and females in sport is something we're really passionate about."

The social women's basketball sessions take place at St Columba's on Monday evenings from 7.30-8.30pm. Those looking to take part just need comfortable clothes, trainers and a water bottle. For more information, visit the club's Facebook page.
