THE life of a much-loved Inverkeithing High School teacher was remembered with a second football tournament in his honour last weekend.

After its successful debut 12 months ago, the Hamish Ferguson Memorial Festival – organised by Inverkeithing United – returned and attracted hundreds of youngsters from across Scotland on July 28-29.

Last year’s event saw more than 200 kids play seven-a-side games but the 2018 edition included tournaments at nine and 11-a-side for the first time.

Teams from as far afield as Ayrshire and Dundee travelled to take part in the tournament, which saw sides at 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 age level take to the pitches at Rosyth Civil Service Club and Pitreavie.

Hamish, who taught at Inverkeithing for more than 30 years and coached a number of pupils, including Craig Levein, Gordon Durie and Steven Pressley, who all went on to play football professionally and represent Scotland, passed away at the age of 63 in 2015.

Jamie Kinnear, a former pupil of Hamish’s, helped reform Inverkeithing United – who Hamish and brother Euan coached in the 1970s – last year, and said: “It went really well and exceeded our expectations.

“Last year we tested the water but said we’d be looking to progress it further, and progressed from one age group to four. It was a bold move on our part but we had teams from the length and breadth of Scotland.

“We had some fantastic feedback and winners from different regions, which was nice.”

Euan, who attended the festival, added: “It was very touching that they would do that for Hamish.

“He would have loved it because he was just as interested in watching kids play for the enjoyment.”
