BOWLERS of all abilities came together recently as a Dunfermline club launched a bid to increase participation among both able-bodied and disabled players.

Headwell Bowling Club, on Shamrock Street, opened their doors to host a disability bowls inclusion day in conjunction with West Fife Community Support Services and Disability Sport Fife.

Based around members of Headwell's disability bowls group, who meet on Thursday afternoons, 19 disability bowlers were joined by 13 gents' and ladies' members to form eight rinks, each of whom played three games of five ends.

Among those taking part were Headwell's own Scottish indoor disability champions for the last two years, Pamela Mitchell and Daryll Stewart; Lumphinnans bowler Gary Handyside and four of the Scottish disability squad, who inspired group members with an impressive array of district, national, international, Commonwealth and world championship medals.

The winning teams in sections one and two respectively were the Lions and the Wolves, while prizes were also awarded throughout the day for 'first chalker', and nearest the jack on selected ends, by a disability bowler, while all competitors were presented with a club pen and badge.

A buffet and entertainment was laid on afterwards and Alyn Steedman, Headwell secretary, said: "The event turned out to be a fantastic success with everyone having a fun-filled afternoon and many new friendships made.

"The hope from all sides is that this will become a regular event that will promote and encourage cross-community integration."
