A MEMBER of Dunfermline Golf Club was the second top performing Scot competing at a prestigious tournament last week.

Evie MacCallum was one of 10 members of Scottish Golf's 2024 girls' squad that joined an international field of players at the Scottish Girls' Open Championship, and placed inside the top 25.

A total of 23 homegrown players went head-to-head with competitors from nine other nations at the event, held last Wednesday to Friday at Powfoot Golf Club, Annan.

First played for in 2016, the popularity of this year's championship from players based in Scotland and abroad was such that a ballot was required to decide the starting field of 144.

As well as under-18 players from Scotland, there were competitors from Ireland, including defending champion, Olivia Costello, England, Wales, Austria, Czechia, France, Germany, Malta and the USA taking to the course, with those under-16 also having the chance to play for the Menzies Trophy.

The first two days of competition saw Evie and the rest of the field play 18 holes of stroke play, which was then cut down to the leading 60 for the final round.

Despite carding a bogey on the opening hole, Evie went on to score a two-under-par first round score of 71, securing birdies at the fourth, seventh and 10th.

She finished four over after her second round, which safely ensured she made the cut, where she posted a 12-over-par score of 85, finishing 14-over for the tournament.

Evie finished in joint-25th place, alongside England's Annabel Peaford, with Freya Russell of Royal Troon Golf Club, who placed eighth at nine-over-par, the only Scottish-based player to end the competition higher on the leaderboard.

The tournament was won by England's Chloe Tarbard, whose four-over-par score was one shot clear of compatriot, Nellie Ong, Germany's Maria Neuhaus, and Ireland's Hannah Lee-McNamara.
