EUROPEAN boxing champion Niamh Mitchell is set to continue a fruitful year in the ring so far when her club hosts a home show on Friday evening.

The talented teenager, who is from Rosyth, is scheduled to be on the bill for the event at Bowhill Miners Boxing Club, who are based in Cardenden.

Dunfermline High School pupil Niamh will be aiming to continue her good form in 2024 at the event, which comes a year after she headlined an historic first all-female show to be held in Scotland, which was organised by her club.

In January, she competed at Boxing Scotland's 'Clash on the Clyde' event at Glasgow's Crowne Plaza Hotel, in which she posted a victory, whilst she also picked up a pair of wins representing Scotland in a dual match with Wales at the end of last month, also in Glasgow.

In addition, Niamh, who in 2022 made history by becoming the first female to win gold for Scotland at a major competition, when she won the 52kg light bantamweight title at the EUBC (European Boxing Confederation) European Junior Championship, was also invited to trial for Great Britain.

Whilst she described picking up wins against Wales as "really good" after brushing off "a bit of ring-rust", she said that taking to the ring at the 'Clash on the Clyde' was a particular highlight of her year so far.

"It was really big, it was a really good event actually," she said.

"The atmosphere was unreal, honestly. It was probably one of the best walk outs I've had. It was so good.

"The whole venue was brilliant and then I had a table with my family and friends, so having them there just made it a better atmosphere.

"I feel when it's on your own turf, you've always got that wee bit of pressure you need to get the win.

"It's not even about winning - I feel I need to perform better when I'm in front of my home crowd, so there's always that wee bit more pressure, but I don't mind it. It pushes you.

"I've got my home show, so that'll be good, in front of the home crowd, and obviously my club's the one holding it, which is even better."

One of her coaches at Bowhill, James White, who also worked with her whilst at Valleyfield Boxing Club previously, commented: "It'll be a good show.

"We've got a girl coming from England for Niamh and there's quite a few English lads coming up as well. There's European champions, British, Scottish, English champions that will be on the bill.

"The way it's shaping up, it looks like it's going to be a cracking night of boxing."
