ORGANISERS of the Pitreavie RaceRunning Group will be able to buy their first running bike after hosting a successful fundraiser recently.

The group, formed with the support of Pitreavie Amateur Athletics Club and Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, raised £2,500 from a sponsored RaceRunning day on June 26 which will enable them to buy their first ‘RaceRunner’ bike.

RaceRunning is an innovative sport that gives children and adults who can normally only get around in an electric or manual wheelchair or walker the chance to race at relatively high speed by using a RaceRunner, also known as a petra bike. They are tricycle bikes without pedals that allow disabled athletes to race under their own steam.

After an inaugural event at Pitreavie Athletics Club in April saw 20 children with cerebral palsy and neuromuscular conditions attend come and try sessions, the group are looking to host weekly sessions.

The money raised on the day was enough for one of the specialised bikes to be bought.
