EILIDH DOYLE rounded off the IAAF World Championships in style by winning a 4x400 metres relay silver medal last night.

The Pitreavie AAC hurdler, who captained the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team for the event, teamed-up with fellow Scot Zoey Clark, Laviai Nielsen and Emily Diamond to produce a performance that bettered the bronze medal achieved in Beijing two years ago.

Having finished eighth in the 400m hurdles final on Thursday, Doyle did not race in Saturday's heat as the GB quartet eased into the final in second behind the United States.

She was back for the final - the penultimate event at the London meet - and took the baton from Nielsen for the third leg.

Although she tried as she approached the line, the 30-year-old held on to hand over to Diamond, who raced home behind the USA for second in a time of 3:25.00.

Afterwards, Doyle said: "We knew were capable of getting a medal today, but we knew it would be tough – we all know America and Jamaica are strong, but then you’ve got Nigeria and Poland too.

"For us to win a silver medal, when we always seem to be bronze, it’s just incredible to go one better and finish with that – it has been a great ending to what has been a great Championships."

Poland made up the podium as they finished in a time of 3:25.41, while Jamaica failed to finish after Anneisha McLaughlin-Whilby was injured on the second lap.
