Carnegie crowned Fife swimming champions

CARNEGIE Swimming Club were crowned Fife Champions at the weekend after dominating the annual Fife Championships.

The team won 28 individual gold medals, 26 silvers and 18 bronze as well as both relay golds. There were 108 final appearances while youngsters Ellie Brisbane and British age group champion Mark Szaranek (pictured) attained clean sweeps of all five gold medals on offer in their age groups.

There were also two records achieved, a Scottish masters record for Wendy Szaranek in the 50m breaststroke and Ailsa Hershaw broke her own East District age group record in the 50m backstroke.

In the 10 and under age group, Ewan McElwee won four golds in the 200m individual medley, 50m back, 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle while nine-year-old Jack Szaranek won three silver medals for the 50m butterfly, back and breaststroke and two bronze medals for the 200m individual medley and 50m freestyle. Calum Ritchie won bronze in the 50m backstroke.

In the 11/12 age group, 12-year-olds Ellie Brisbane and Mark Szaranek won five gold medals each in the 200m individual medley and in each of the 50m back, breast, butterfly and freestyle. Caitlin Burns won four silver medals for 200m individual medley, 50m backstroke, butterfly and freestyle and 12-year-old twin brothers Blair and Myles Hershaw between them won seven medals with Blair winning three silver in the 200m individual medley, 50m breaststroke and 50m fly and a bronze for the 50m freestyle and Myles winning three bronze for the 200m individual medley, 50m backstroke and butterfly. Zoe Mitchell also won silver for the 50m breaststroke and two bronze for the 200m individual medley and 50m backstroke. Jordan Lamb won silver for the 50m backstroke, Kieran Watson won bronze for the 50m breaststroke and Ruth Laird won bronze for the 50m freestyle.

In the 13/14 age group Ailsa Hershaw won four gold medals in the 200m individual medley, 50m backstroke, butterfly and freestyle and silver in the 50m breaststroke. Ewan Storrar won three gold medals in the 50m backstroke, freestyle and breaststroke and silver in the 50m butterfly, where he was just pipped by his team mate, Duncan Chalmers, who won the gold along with silver in the 50m freestyle. Blaine Small won two silver medals in the 200m individual medley and 50m butterfly and bronze in the 50m breaststroke while Nicola Lamb won bronze in the 200m individual medley.

In the 15 and over age groups Eloise Barber won four golds in the 200m individual medley, 50m butterfly, backstroke and freestyle and silver in the 50m breaststroke. Michael Kane produced some excellent swims winning gold in the 50m breaststroke, silver in the 50m freestyle and bronze in the 50m back. Kathryn Johnstone won gold in the 50m breaststroke along with silver in the 200m individual medley and 50m freestyle and bronze in the 50m butterfly and backstroke. Callum Shaw won three silver medals in the 200m individual medley, 50m backstroke and 50m butterfly, bronze in the 50m freestyle and breaststroke. Jennifer Davis won silver in the 50m butterfly and backstroke along with bronze in the 50m freestyle.

Masters swimmers Wendy Szaranek made two finals in the 50m breast and 50m butterfly and husband John competed in three finals – 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle and 50m breaststroke.

The female and male relay teams of Ailsa Hershaw, Kathryn Johnstone, Jennifer Johnstone and Eloise Barber and Callum Shaw, Michael Kane, Craig Rodgie and Euan Storrar also romped home in their respective 200m individual relay events, both winning gold by in excess of a length.
