Pitreavie finish third in young athlete's meeting

PITREAVIE"S athletes were competing in the second match of the Young Athletes League at Grangemouth Stadium on Sunday.

Two of the club"s under-15 girls smashed the league records in their events. Kirsten Galbraith broke the long jump record with a massive leap of 5.51 metres, which is also further than the 36-year-old club record. Gerelle Pasquin broke the discus record with a throw of 30.46m.

Neither girl was finished there as Kirsten also won the 100m in a time of 12.64 seconds and joined Naomi Fox, Rachel Easton and Alison Craig to win the 4x100m in a time of 52.38. Gerelle also won the shot putt with 10.55m, nearly two metres further than the second placed girl.

The under-15 girls" 75m hurdles gave the club a double victory with Fox winning the A string race in a time of 12.24 and Rose Fagan winning the B string with a time of 12.76. Michaela Brown was third in the 800m A string with 2:24.60.

The under-13 boys picked up lots of points for the club. In the 100m Stewart Soutar was second in the A string with 13.91 and Rory Fulton was third in the A string 200m with 29.31. Aidan Thompson was also third in the 1500m A string with 5:00.43.

The under-13 girls also did their bit for the club. Chloe Nethery was second in the 70m hurdles in 13.11 and Vhairi McAtear was second in the 800m A string in 2:33.84.

In the under-17s Anthony Young led the way competing in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 4x400m. In the 100m he was second in a time of 11.32, in the 200m he won the race in a time of 22.52 and he also won the 400m in a time of 50.75.

Finally he anchored Luke Kelly, Joe Millar and Ewan Dyer to a second-place finish, just missing out on victory by 0.27 seconds with a time of 3:38.84.

The under-17 girls had some good performances, Kathryn Pennel was second in the 800m with a time of 2:19.69. In the 80m hurdles Hannah Solley was fourth A string with 13.34 and Olivia Clark was second B string with 14.48.

The club ended the match in third place overall.

Five of the club"s athletes were competing for Scotland at the Loughborough International on Sunday. Eilidh Child, on her first outing over her specialist event, the 400m hurdles, leaped to the top of the UK rankings, winning the race in a new personal best time of 56.27 and more importantly, the time was under the qualifying standards for next year"s Commonwealth Games and this season"s European Under-23 championships.

Stacey Downie competed in the 100m and 200m. In the 100m she was fifth in 12.20 and in the 200m she placed fourth in a time of 24.37.

Stephanie Walker came down in distance to run the 100m hurdles, where she finished seventh with a time of 15.04 in a race won by the world"s leading heptathlete, Jessica Ennis.

Francis Smith recorded a season"s best when placing fifth in the 400m hurdles in a time of 52.66. Ryan Oswald ran 10.80 to place second in an invitation 100m before running in the 4x100m team that finished third.

In the second series of the Bank Of Scotland Hammerama at Grangemouth on Saturday Ross McManus threw further than the club record with 54.67m.
