Pitreavie achieve best ever league position

PITREAVIE AAC"S Scottish Women"s Athletics League team excelled in the second league match at Meadowbank on Sunday.

After finishing third, their best ever position, in the first match, the team were determined to equal this on Sunday. However, such was the commitment of the seniors and youth athletes of the club that they finished second behind winners Edinburgh AC.

With Edinburgh Southern Harriers amalgamating with City of Edinburgh and Victoria Park with City of Glasgow, Pitreavie AAC are the only true "stand alone club" in the league and the ladies" team can be proud of their result.

The sprinters and sprint hurdlers were up against a strong head wind but Stephanie Walker won the senior 400m hurdles A in 63secs and then notched up a double by winning the 200m A in 25.4secs. Jackie Tindall continued her comeback after nine years away from the sport with a fine treble finishing equal first in the senior high jump A by clearing 1.60m, then coming first in the 100m hurdles A in 14.9secs, a season"s best and first in the B 200m in 27.5, a time she last achieved as a 15-year-old. Tindall and Walker competed in the long jump and finished third A and third B respectively. Tindall also ran a leg of the 4x100m and Walker ran in both relays.

Fiona Cressy showed great confidence in the senior 3000m with a fine win in 10:06.07 and ran a season"s best of 4:49.05 in the 1500m. Lucy Crookston travelled from Loughborough to compete. She finished third in the B 400m hurdles and ran well in both relays.

In the under-17 age group, Bethanie Finlayson also achieved a double by winning the 100m in 13.0secs and the 200m in 25.5secs. She also competed in the discus and ran a superb leg of the 4x100m relay. Jessica Barrows was third in the under-17 women"s 100m B in a personal best time of 13.6secs running into the strongest wind of the day of minus 3.2 metres per second. In the 200m she was also third in the B race in 27.9secs. Katherine Pennel was third in the under-17 800m A in 2:17.9 and stepped up to the senior ranks for the 1500m, in which she was first B in 4:55.2.

Pitreavie"s throwers produced some excellent results, Gerelle Pasquin achieved a personal best in the under-15 shot with a massive 11.64m. Mhairi Porterfield was second in the A hammer with 52.8m and sister Kirsty Wilson was first in the B event with a personal best of 47.84m. In the discus Porterfield and Wilson were second A and second B respectively with 35.28m and 25.98m. Porterfield won the shot A with 12.44m and Wilson the B event with 9.51m. In the javelin they were third and fourth respectively.

Kirsten Galbraith achieved an excellent double by winning the under-15 100m A in 13.3secs and the long jump with 5.14m.

The young hurdlers in the team produced some great results.

In the under-13 girls" 70m hurdles, Chloe Nethery achieved a personal best of 12.8secs when finishing second. Zoe Black also achieved a PB when winning the B 70m hurdles in 13.1secs.

In the under-15 girls" 75m hurdles Naomi Fox was first in 12.5secs in the A race and Rose Fagan was also first in the B race in 13.3secs. New team member Hollie Keanie was second in the B 200m in a PB of 27.9secs.

In the under-17 women"s 80m hurdles Hanna Solley was fourth A in 13.6secs and Olivia Clark third B in 14.9secs. In the 300m hurdles Solley was fourth in a PB of 53.4secs in the B race and she was also fourth in the A shot. Kirsty Hutton achieved a PB in the under-17 300m B race when finishing third in 46.4secs.

The senior ladies" 4x100m team of Christina Sharples, Jackie Tindall, Lucy Crookston and Stephanie Walker was fourth in 51.5secs. The under-17 4x100m relay team of Olivia Clark, Bethanie Finlayson, Anna Robertson and Jessica Barrows was second. The under-15 relay team of Rose Fagan, Rachel Easton, Alison Craig and Hollie Keanie was second in 53.5secs.
