WEST FIFE athletes were in action at the weekend against their counterparts from the rest of the Kingdom and Tayside in their very own version of the Commonwealth Games.

The two days of competition at Dunfermline's Pitreavie Athletics Stadium, organised by Pitreavie AAC, was inspired by this summer's Glasgow 2014 Games.

Prior to a full programme of track and field events across all ages, there was an 'Opening Ceremony' featuring a parade of athletes, flag-bearers, dance troups, majorettes and performers.

Provost of Fife, Jim Leishman, led the parade and was joined by former Olympic sprinter and Pitreavie athlete Ian Mackie, who also presented the medals to the winners on both days.

Eight clubs competed against each other - and the elements. Runners battled against a strong wind in the home straight, while throwers and jumpers also had to cope in difficult conditions.

To add to the Commonwealth Games experience, the eight clubs taking part 'adopted' a country to represent.

Athletes from host club Pitreavie represented New Zealand, Dunfermline Track & Field became Australia, Arbroath & District represented Kenya, Fife AC's athletes became South Africans, Montrose represented Jamaica, Perth Strathtay represented Canada, the Run, Jump & Throw Development Team represented Trinidad & Tobago and the Dundee team, sporting specially created vests for the occasion, ran for Malaysia.

More than 300 athletes took part over the two days, while there were opportunities for young children not yet involved in athletics to take part in a range of 'come and try' events, as well as a special race to find the 'Fastest Kid in Tayside and Fife'.

Debbie Scott, Pitreavie AAC Club Together officer and match convenor, said, "We're delighted so many athletes joined us for our Commonwealth celebration.

"The level of competition was extremely high and we had some outstanding performances over the weekend, despite the strong wind making conditions difficult for the athletes.

"I'd like to thank the clubs for their participation, as well as all the volunteers without whose help and expertise this event would not have been possible."
